National Council

Fair Vote Canada is governed by a democratically elected 15-person National Council.

Five three-year positions are elected each year through a single transferable voting (STV) system. All FVC members in good standing are eligible to vote and run for office. Each year the National Council members elect a five-person Executive Committee, consisting of a president, vice president, treasurer and two at-large members.

The Executive Director reports to the National Council and is responsible for managing the national campaign and organizational affairs. Executive Director Larry Gordon can be contacted at larry.gordon at fairvote.ca.

Rick Anderson (2009)

Rick has spent more than 20 years being active in federal politics in the Liberal Party and later as an advisor to Preston Manning and the Reform Party. He is currently a political commentator, advisor and Director of the Fireweed Democracy Project. 

Doug Bailie (2011)  doug.bailie at fairvotecanada.org

Doug is a founding member of FVC and is president of the Edmonton Chapter. He has an MA in History from the University of Alberta and currently manages a constituency office for an Alberta MLA.

Wendy Bergerud (2009) wendy.bergerud at fairvote.ca

Wendy was one of the 160 British Columbians chosen to be in the B.C. Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform. She worked with her fellow alumni to let their fellow citizens know about the 2005 referendum and why they chose BC-STV. She was the liaison between the alumni and the Yes to BC-STV campaign. She has been active on the executive of the Victoria Chapter of Fair Vote Canada.

Peter worked for 30 years as a policy analyst in the Saskatchewan and Canadian governments. He has been very active in the National Capital Region Chapter of Fair Vote Canada, serving two years as Executive Secretary.

Andy Blair (2011) - At-Large Executive

Stephen Broscoe (2010) - President   stephen.broscoe at fairvote.ca

Stephen is a computer professional working as a freelance consultant in the Greater Vancouver area. He is the national president of Fair Vote Canada and was also a spokesperson and member of the steering committee for the Yes to BC-STV Campaign for provincial electoral reform in BC in May 2005.

Jennie Dailey-O'Cain (2011) - Secretary

Jennie is a member of the Edmonton chapter executive and also active in Fair Voting BC. She writes a political blog, Idealistic Pragmatist, where she frequently covers electoral reform, and is an associate professor of applied linguistics at the University of Alberta.

Wilf Day (2010) dayphope at on.aibn.com

Wilf has been a lawyer in Port Hope, Ontario since 1971, and was a school trustee for 12 years. He is one of the founders of the multipartisan FVC chapter in Northumberland County, Ontario, and has been active for many years in legal, community, non-profit, and political organizations in Ontario.

John Deverell (2011) - Treasurer   john.deverell at fairvote.ca

John was for 25 years a labour, political and business reporter at the Toronto Star before his retirement in 2004. He is past president of CEP 87M Southern Ontario Newsmedia Guild, chair of the FVC Labour for Fair Voting caucus, and co-author of the 1993 book Democracy, Eh? A Guide to Voter Action.

June Macdonald (2009) june.macdonald at fairvote.ca

June recently completed a doctorate with voting system reform as a focus and has been a college educator for the past 20 years. She was one of the founders of the FVC Toronto Chapter and has been involved in the chapter as co-chair, as a presenter and has participated in many outreach activities.

Barbara Odenwald (2010) - Vice President

Barbara, new to Quebec and the National Capital Region, has a background in teaching high school civics and history. She is passionate about engaging youth in the democratic process, reflected in her teaching, her work with Student Vote, Historica, and a host of other organisations. She is president and founding member of the FVC Montreal Chapter, and has been active promoting fair voting both in B.C. and now in Quebec and the NCR. 

Dennis Pilon (2009)  

Dennis teaches Canadian politics and comparative elections and electoral system at the University of Victoria.  His research focuses on many aspects of  electoral reform, specifically questions about why voting systems change. Over the past 15 years he has written extensively about voting system reform.

Linda Sheppard (2010) linda.sheppard at fairvote.ca

After spending most of her career in children's publishing, Linda completed an M.Ed in 2002 and is presently working on an alternative model for adult ESL delivery. She has been involved in the Toronto Chapter of FVC since its early beginnings, serving as co-chair and member of the speakers committee as well as participating in many outreach activities.

Wayne Smith (2011) wayne.smith at fairvote.ca

Wayne Smith is Administration Manager of Furniture Bank, a charity that collects donated furniture and gives it to refugees and people leaving shelters to set up a home. Wayne is a former President of Fair Vote Canada, founding Director of the Fair Vote Ontario campaign, and founding Chair of the FVC Toronto Chapter.

Julian West (2010) julian.west at fairvotecanada.org

Julian teaches mathematics at Malaspina University-College in Nanaimo, B.C. and a director of Fair Voting BC. He has spoken on electoral reform before the Parliamentary Committee on House Affairs and numerous other committees and commissions.
